We have a few special years with our children when they’re the ones that want us around. After that you’re going to be running after them for a bit of attention … It’s a few years, and it’s over.
I decided to watch the movie Hook last night after realizing it’s been a while since I last watched it. This quote really grabbed my attention. It is said by the wife of Robin Williams’ character in a scene where he is working too hard and ignoring his children trying to play with him.
It hit me in the heart because it’s completely true, and reflective of a place I was a couple years ago. My day job, side projects, and the early stages of a startup was taking over and I found myself spending more time on the computer than with my wife and newborn daughter.
The quote ends with what really cut me to the quick.
You are not being careful. And you are missing it.
I’m glad I’m now at a point where I’m limiting my side projects in favor of spending that time with my family. It’s very easy to get caught up in work and become blind to how it affects your loved ones who struggle to get any attention from you. That’s probably a post in itself tough.
