I wasn’t into Coheed and Cambria much when I was in high school. I think it was something about his voice I didn’t like. Then I met my future wife.
She was obsessed with their first album Second Stage Turbine Blade. I don’t know why, I don’t even think she knows why. But I can’t listen to it without thinking of her and those early years. The many hours listening to this album in the car on our way to wherever was important at age 18. Her singing her heart out, me slowly starting to know the songs and come around to Coheed.
There’s one time that sticks out in my mind for some reason. I joined her on her paper delivery route super early in the morning. It was such a seemingly small part of our relationship at the time. Sitting there in her red Sebring convertible, heat blasting, listening to this album as we hopped in and out to deliver newspapers. At one point she reached for my ankle at a line in the song Time Consumer that goes
Grab on to my sleeve
The one that grabs at your ankle
I don’t know why I remember this, but it’s so vivid in my mind. I’ll never forget that moment. Music has this incredible way to spark memories.
