“This one is a big shell!” The youngest is taking his mid-day nap in the camper. The weather outside finally broke from the cold rain we’ve had all week. Blue skies with a warm sun shining through the paintbrush stroke clouds.
We’re outside finding things to do and suddenly there’s an impromptu scavenger hunt for rocks. The gravel on our camp site is full of fossilized shells and coral. I figure the batch they dropped here must have been collected from a dried-up sea bed.
“Do you remember how fossils like these are made?” The outdoors is full of teaching moments for kids. And when it’s fun, that makes learning fun.
All in all we find at least 15 cool rocks for her nature collection. Fossilized shells, fossilized impressions, even a sparkly geode-like rock.
Impromptu treasure hunts are the best.
