The house is quiet. So quiet I can hear the low hum of the furnace in the basement and the hiss of the Keurig as it heats water in the kitchen. It’s a rare moment when both kids are content to play and read quietly by themselves. A drastic, but welcome change from the past week of noise, bickering, and jumping off the walls. The cabin fever has subsided for a brief thirty minutes.
The adults take advantage of the peace that is in scarce supply during the holiday break from school. Painting, reading, nodding off for a minute or two. The patter of the raindrops hitting the windows is soothing white noise ushering me to a quick cat nap. It’s a nice way to spend part of a rainy New Year’s Eve afternoon.
“Cece stop!” “Fine, then I’m not playing!”
Jolted awake by the return of sibling quarrels over nothing of consequence. It was nice while it lasted.
